Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Brings Hope To Children With Autism Symptoms

Recent studies in the medical world, on autism symptoms and autism treatment, bring not only hope, but actual help, to families with autistic children. Lead physician and researcher, Daniel Rossignol, M.D., treats children with autism. Seeing his patients improve with hyperbaric oxygen treatment led him to conduct the first large scale, double-blind, controlled study to examine the effectiveness hyperbarics for autism treatment. And, the results of this study demonstrate positive improvements.

What happens in the HBOT Chamber –

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy traditionally involves inhaling up to 100% oxygen at a pressure greater than 1 atmosphere (atm) in a pressurized chamber. In the first randomized, controlled, double-blind multicenter trial, published in BMC Pediatrics and entitled “Hyperbaric treatment for children with autism: a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, controlled trial.” Dr. Rossignol and colleagues, from 6 centers in the USA, studied 62 children, aged 2-7 years, to assess the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen treatment in children showing autism symptoms.

The research trial concludes that children with autism who received hyperbaric for autism treatment in HBOT Chambers at 1.3 atmospheres and 24% oxygen for 40 hourly sessions had significant improvements in overall functioning, receptive language, social interaction, eye contact, and sensory/cognitive awareness compared to children who received slightly pressurized room air.

The children were randomly assigned to either 40 hours of hyperbaric treatment at 1.3 atm and 24% oxygen (treatment group) or slightly pressurized room air at 1.03 atm and 21% oxygen (non-treatment group). Clinical outcomes were evaluated by three different scales: the Clinical Global Impression (CGI) scale, the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC), and the Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist (ATEC).

Dr. Rossignol said, “In our study, we observed significant improvements in several core autistic behaviors with the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatment at 1.3 atm compared to children receiving near-placebo treatment. These findings confirm what we are seeing in clinical practice–that many children with autism may benefit with the use of this treatment.”

Director of the International Hyperbarics Association, Shannon Kenitz, said, “With autism on the rise, it is promising to see a study that has been conducted with the high standards endorsed by the medical community. Having this scientifically controlled and analyzed study that shows the positive effects of hyperbarics is truly what this community has needed. The study not only presents the benefit of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for children with autism, but also gives families the hope that so many other therapies have failed to do.”

“The impact of this study on the autism community is significant. It brings validity to a successful intervention that needs to become part of mainstream medicine,” commented Kyle Van Dyke, M.D., and Autism Specialist from Madison, Wisconsin.

The growing concern regarding autism in this country is reinforced by the critically high ranking this study as earned by BMC Pediatrics. It is currently the most accessed article and projected to continue to climb in significance.

Reaching Your Academic Potential

I have always been bright and intelligent, but I am also one of those who simply have to work flat out to get the best results academically. Some people sail through school, college and university with flying colours, having barely broken sweat on an essay. But I have to work at it, and although I knew this when I started university, I was not really prepared for the amount of work I would get all at once.

Don’t think for a minute that I am lazy, or want to do things with the least possible effort all the time. The problem is for me to get a 2:1 or a first I knew I would have to work flat out on every assignment. Something that would take the next person a couple of days and gain them an easy 2:1 would mean four or five days work for me and even then only a chance of getting a 2:1. I would leave something out, not explain my point well enough or be unable to back what I said up with credible evidence.

I found I was getting quite down about it. One day, after another long session in the library, I was chatting with a friend about our upcoming assignment, when she handed me an essay she had bought online. She had finished with it and had used the reference lists and noted some of the points to guide her own work. So this was her secret, I thought, this is how she gets great marks.

I read the essay and it was if a light bulb had switched on in my head. I knew exactly what I wanted to say and how. The essay was perfectly written, and gave me ideas I didn’t even know I had. I couldn’t believe it when I got a first for that paper. It was my first one, although I hoped it would not be the last.

After that, I checked papers4you.com regularly. Sometimes I didn’t need to get one of their papers, but found their free advice and free articles really helpful. Other times, when I felt I needed more direction, I would buy a paper. Each time I was really happy with the quality of the work. Their reference lists were invaluable, and meant I could find the books or journals I needed in minutes. The papers simply pop in your inbox after you have paid. It’s so easy and the price is really student-friendly.

When it came to my dissertation, I knew exactly what I wanted to look at. I scanned papersforyou.com and found one that was similar to mine. I bought it and it helped me on a number of levels. I was able to see how to structure my dissertation and learnt a bit more about the subject I was tackling. I used the reference list time and time again, and probably found information I would easily have missed otherwise. Of course, my tutor was on hand to help, but you can’t go running to them every two minutes.

I got a 2:1 for my dissertation and a 2:1 overall in my degree. I still put the hard work in, but the papers I used for some of my assignments undoubtedly saved me time and helped me reach my full potential.

Why Should You Study in New Zealand?

New Zealand is fast emerging as an attractive study abroad destination for international students. Yes, you can. A New Zealand education not only provides you a world class degree, it also provides you a great opportunity to work and reside in this wonderful country after the completion of your course.

The recent reports bring forth that students aspiring to study in New Zealand would now be able to obtain a student visa in a much easier and transparent way. To make New Zealand a much popular destination in comparison to the UK, the USA, Canada or Australia; a new type of student visa would make way, thus making it easier for the overseas students.

The announcement of a new type of student visa was made recently by New Zealand’s Immigration Minister, Jonathan Coleman and he opined that the introduction of the new type of visa would counter the prevalent red tapism. To make the visa process speedier and less stringent, interim visas would be issued while a student’s application is still being processed. In addition, background checks and medical examination renewals would also only be needed to be completed every three years instead of every two years.

However, all the students would still have to meet all the standard criteria, but the new visa would provide peace of mind for students and would make the enrolment process smoother for education providers. The proposed changes would take effect from February 2011 and would also bring a spite of relief to the 2 billion Dollar education export industry of New Zealand.

Appreciating the changes, Col. BS Sandhu (Retd) CMD, WWICS said that the new changes would surely add to the popularity of New Zealand as a study abroad destination country. He added that students are keen to study in the beautiful country New Zealand; however, the stringent rules and less transparency posed as stumbling blocks. With the new visa type, New Zealand would surely witness more students eager to study in the country.
